Wood Pile Cover – Large

when stroring firewood, is it necessary to stack the wood or can I put in in a large pile and cover it?
A loose heap of wood allows water to soak more surface area than if it is stacked. Additionally, more wood on the bottom is in contact with the soil which will soak up ground moisture, and attract termites and rodents.
Stack it loosely if it is green or extremely wet (ideally in narrow rows). You want the air to circulate freely through the wood, so that on drier days, the wood will surrender excess moisture to the air. A covering should only be over the very top, and not down the sides too much, as that would restrict air-flow.
When the wood comes already seasoned, I stack it tightly on pallets, forming a ridge in the middle (a rough roof shape) when I’ve got it high enough. I then cover the stack with a sheet of cardboard (I get these at Sams Club at 7AM), and weigh it down with a few pieces of locust (preservative is in the wood). This keeps the rain off until I’m ready to use it.
